Neighbor to Neighbor…
Issues that are reported
Recently, it was reported that homeowners with children wanted to take their children to the park near the David Weekly homes, but there were a group of rowdy unsupervised children (8-10 years old) on the playground equipment.  During this time there were two football teams practicing in the same area and it is assumed that these were children of the parents that had other children involved in one of the two football teams.   Along with this there is trash left behind and there is a concern that  HOA dues might need to be used to repair damage to the playground equipment.  Both the HOA board and the community of homeowners in general would like homeowners and guests of homeowners to remind parents whose kids are playing without supervision, that we do not want to parent other peoples’ children and destructive and unsafe behavior will not be tolerated. It is simply not fair to the kids who want to enjoy the playground. Damage that is done to the playground can be charged to the homeowner directly. If you know the address of the homeowner, please give that information to the HOA; for future incidents contact the local authorities to report the vandalism of the parks, as this is not simply an inconvenience, but a crime. Please help us keep our parks clean,
safe, and in good shape for everyone to use and enjoy!

Your kids are not the only ones headed off to school this fall; germs are also making those crowded halls their favorite destination!  On top of teaching your kids to combat peer pressure, it’s also important to help them fight off viruses and bugs.  And there’s no better way to do that than to provide them with healthy snacks and lunches.  All summer, it’s been one ice cream social and barbecue after another, but what they need now is real nutrition to keep their immune systems strong against sniffly and drippy classmates.

One easy way to start is to walk past all those “lunch in a box” gimmicks.  Not only will you save money by not buying convenience, you will also find that most healthy foods travel well and can be made fun and appealing to picky eaters.  One of my favorite things to do is make my daughter’s lunch.  I start with a bento lunchbox (you can find them online, I highly recommend the Laptop Lunch (http://www.laptoplunches.com/).  Then I cut fruits and veggies with cookie cutters, attach fun skewers, make tempting dipping sauces, and all around make her lunch the cutest, most fun lunch around.  You can make themes like “circles” — cheese (I use soy or rice cheese) cut into circles, homemade circle crackers, grapes cut into circles, carrots cut into circles, etc. and send her off with a card with polka dots on the front.  You can also make lunches based on a country’s cuisine or a holiday.  You can find recipe ideas online or just make your own according to your child’s preferences.

I make lunches for my entire family at the same time so that lunch the next day is easy for all of us.  My husband no longer has to grab a bite on the road, my son gets to eat what his big sister has, and I can break the habit of the noon-time stare into the refrigerator.  If you aren’t able to devote that much time into making lunches, consider packing leftover dinner with plenty of fruits and veggies on the side.  Most kids don’t mind eating their food cold the next day.  But best of all, I know that I’m not only sending my love in a lunchbox, I’m sending virus-fighting nutrient-rich foods that keep her in school where she belongs, and out of a doctor’s office.
